Very early vehicles were adapted from horse drawn carriages or wagons. The drive from the gearbox
used chain and sprockets similar to a motorcycle. Moving in a straight line does not pose a problem,
however turning around corners proved to be most unsatisfactory! As the development of engines
rapidly progressed and vehicle speeds increased negotiating bends became perilous.
Engineers soon came to realise that during corning one of the fixed wheels on the axle would scrub
across the ground. They discovered that the circular path of the inner wheel on the axle travelled a
lesser radius than the outer wheel, meaning both wheels on a driven axle must turn at different speeds
when cornering.

The invention of the differential is normally attributed to Onésiphore Pecqueur a
Frenchman who in 1828 patented a steam vehicle that used a differential gear on the
driving axle.

gears).
