Beginning with Alaska in 1867, America expanded well beyond the limits of the continental United States.  The Hawaiian Islands, the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico, and other territories came under the control of the United States through various means, creating what some call the American Empire.

Discuss this issue.  Did creating the American Empire conflict with the core values of the Untied States?  The US at one point had been part of the British Empire, and those colonies fought for their independence.  Thereafter, the United States proudly proclaimed their sovereignty.  Now, the US was not respecting the sovereignty of other peoples.  The names may have been different, the US called them territories instead of colonies, but conceptually they were the same.
