Introduction:
Honorable Heads of State, fellow delegates, and distinguished visitors,
We're gathered here today to consider how the CARICOM region's economies have fared in terms of improving their competitiveness in the face of globalization. The bold claim that the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) might create a more competitive Caribbean regional economy was made by H.E. Edwin Carrington, then Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), seventeen years ago.
We will examine Trinidad and Tobago's unique situation and its involvement with the CSME in this session, with an emphasis on how it has responded to and adjusted to the difficulties presented by natural catastrophes in the age of globalization.
CSME Overview
Objectives of the CSME: The CARICOM member states were intended to further their economic integration through the CSME. Its main goals include encouraging the free flow of money, labor, products, and services to support regional economic growth and development.
