Question

The first diagram shows the set up for a water filtration system. For this diagram assume all filters function independently of each other. The process is water goes through filter A which stops large pieces like rocks and large fish; then it moves to one of the three B filters which filters out small fish and pebbles; then it all moves to filter C to filter out Alga and finally filter D that gets rid of everything else. The probability that filter A malfunctions at a given time is 0.15; the probability one of the B filters malfunctions at any given time is 0.03; C malfunctioning is 0.02 and D malfunctioning is 0.015. For the process to run filters A, C, D and at least 2 of the B filters must be functioning.

a. What is the probability that the machine is functioning at any given time?

b.If we need the probability that the whole system is successful to be at least 88% what do we need to increase the probability of A functioning properly to? Assume B, C and D are as given then find the value needed for A.
