Arteries are basically blood vessels that take the blood from the heart to the other parts of the body such lungs, tissues, and brain. Most of the arteries deliver oxygenated blood but two arteries known as pulmonary artery and umbilical artery carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs and placenta respectively. Arteries are muscular tubes lined with smooth tissues. Arteries have three layers: tunica externa (outermost layer), tunica intima (innermost layer), and tunica media (middle layer).
