PEDIGREE ANALYSIS
Answer: A pedigree is a fmily tree or chart made of symbols and lines that represent a person genetic family history. In oedigree, symbols represent people and lines represent genetic relationships. the pedigree is a visual tool for documenting the biological relationship in families and determine the mode of inheritance ( dominant , recessive etc) of genetic diseases. pedigrees are most often constructed by medical genetisists or genetic counselors.
VARIOUS TYPES OF PATTERNS IN PEDIGREE:
AUTOSOMAL RECESSIVE INHERITANCE:
- traits often skip generations
- an almost equal number of affected males and females
- if both parents are affected , all children should be affected
- most affected individuals have unaffected parents.
AUTOSOMAL DOMINANT INHERITANCE:
- traits should not skip generations
- an affected person mating with an unaffected person should produce approx 50% affected offspring
- the distribution of the traits among the offspring should be equal
- transmitted by either sex
X- LINKED RECESSIVE INHERITANCE
- most affected individuals are male
- affected males should results from mothers who are affected or who are known to be carriers
- affected females come from affected father and affected or carrier mother
- the sons of affected mothers should be affected
- approx half the sons of carriers should be affected
X-LINKED DOMINANT INHERITANCE
- the trait does not skip generations
- affected males must come from affected mothers
- approx half the children of an affected heterozygous females are affected
- affected females come from affected mother or father
- all the daughters , but none of the sons, of an affected father are affected
Y-LINKED INHERITANCE
- affects only males
- affected males always have an affected father
- all sons of an affected man are affected
