As you probably know, the Titantic, on its maiden voyage, hit an iceberg and sank in the matter of hours. The following table summarizes the classes of people and their surviving. Survived Died Total First class 203 122 325 Second class 118 167 285 Third class 178 528 706 Crew 212 696 908 Total 711 1513 2224 Compute each probability to 3 decimal places for a person selected at random. D. the person was in first class or died. E. the person was in first class given they died. F. the person died given they were in first class. G. Based on the data, was whether a person died and the class of the person, dependent or independent? Independent Dependent
Continuous Probability Distributions
Probability distributions are of two types, which are continuous probability distributions and discrete probability distributions. A continuous probability distribution contains an infinite number of values. For example, if time is infinite: you could count from 0 to a trillion seconds, billion seconds, so on indefinitely. A discrete probability distribution consists of only a countable set of possible values.
Normal Distribution
Suppose we had to design a bathroom weighing scale, how would we decide what should be the range of the weighing machine? Would we take the highest recorded human weight in history and use that as the upper limit for our weighing scale? This may not be a great idea as the sensitivity of the scale would get reduced if the range is too large. At the same time, if we keep the upper limit too low, it may not be usable for a large percentage of the population!

First class | 203 | 122 | 325 |
Second class | 118 | 167 | 285 |
Third class | 178 | 528 | 706 |
Crew | 212 | 696 | 908 |

Compute each
D. the person was in first class or died.
E. the person was in first class given they died.
F. the person died given they were in first class.
G. Based on the data, was whether a person died and the class of the person, dependent or independent?
