The lungs are the organs in pairs that take oxygen out of the air and put it into the blood. They also get rid of carbon dioxide, which is a gas that builds up in the blood when oxygen has been used for energy by cells in the body.
The lungs are supplied by both the pulmonary circuit and systemic circuit. The pulmonary circuit is responsible for bringing oxygenated blood into the body, while the systemic circuit is responsible for distributing deoxygenated blood throughout the body.
The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. Within the lungs, this blood interacts with air sacs called alveoli, which are rich in capillaries that are surrounded by a network of small veins called pulmonary veins. The pulmonary vein then drains into larger vessels that lead into the left atrium of the heart. From there, the blood is pumped throughout the body by the left side of the heart.
