Are the Frenchman’s observations still relevant to an understanding of the United States today?
Alexis de Tocqueville was the great grandson of Chretian de Malesherbes who was a stateman in France. Although he was a frail man, he harbored an immense distaste for the routine demands of Parliamentary existence. Thus, he picked politics as his vocation and followed it till he was pushed away from the office. He is the author of two works of political thought, namely, the Old Regime and the Revolution and Democracy in America.
In his writings, Tocqueville describes the inception and character of modern life in the universe of the Christians. He believed that the Christian universe was dominated by a sole fact, that is, 'equality of conditions' or Democracy. He understood democracy as something that was not only self-government but an extensive way of life. He describes and prescribes how intellectual and political greatness can be preserved even when it is prone to many risks.
