Human being is a social animal. Humans are people who live in deep harmony with society and can only survive through mutual cooperation. Socialization is a life long process. The ideologies, norms, culture etc that a man acquires or inherits in his/her life through social interaction are called socialization. Socialization is necessary. It helps to develop skills and abilities of peoples. Socialization is the acquisition of that culture by participating in the affairs of society.

There are some approaches present to understand socialization. Piaget, Mead, Erikson and Gilligan were prominent in putting them forward.  Theory of cognitive development of human intelligence is a well known theory by Piaget. It is explained about the nature and development of human intelligence. But in the case of socialization, he focused more on the adulthood. The role of parents in one's growth is huge. But he says the peer group has a bigger role to play in growth of an adult. The role of the peer group in determining, shaping and controlling one's character is huge. Peer group have more influence in the development of a person. It is known as Group socialization.

George Herbert Mead is an another major person who who explained socialization. His theory is known as Theory of social behaviorism. This theory talks about the role of experience in shaping a person's character. Social experience plays an important role in the development of personality. The main concept of this theory is about self. It includes self-awareness, self- image etc. This theory states that one's self does not come through birth but grows through experience.
