l-cell disease
Golgi disorders can cause the secretory pathways that package and secrete
proteins synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum, such as l-cell disease, also
known as mucolipidosis II, to malfunction. It is caused by the Golgi body's inability to
properly phosphorylate and sort proteins, which results in certain proteins being
secreted that would otherwise be intended for lysosomes.
It is a rare genetic metabolic condition characterized by coarse facial features,
mental retardation and skeletal anomalies. I-cell disease signs are equivalent to, but
more severe than, Hurler 's syndrome. During childhood, the signs associated with
this condition usually become evident and can include numerous skull and face
defects and development delays. I-cell disorder patients suffer from inability to
survive, skeletal defects, and coarse facial features.
