Experimental Procedure
A. Solubility and Salt Formation
Obtain 4 clean test tubes.
Test tube 1 - Place approximately 5mL of distilled water and 1mL of acetic acid
Test tube 2 - Place approximately 5mL of distilled water and 1mL of oleic acid
Test tube 3 - Place approximately 5mL of 1M NaOH and 1mL of acetic acid
Test tube 4 - Place approximately 5mL of 1M NaOH and 1mL of oleic acid
Shake well.
Record your observations.
Note: since oleic acid is a long chain carboxylic acid, you may need to add excess of
NaOH solution to observe the solubility. You should observe foams due to formation
of sodium oleate (soap)

Experimental Procedure
A. Solubility and Salt Formation
Obtain 4 clean test tubes.
Test tube 1 - Place approximately 5mL of distilled water and 1mL of acetic acid
Test tube 2 - Place approximately 5mL of distilled water and 1mL of oleic acid
Test tube 3 - Place approximately 5mL of 1M NaOH and 1mL of acetic acid
Test tube 4 - Place approximately 5mL of 1M NaOH and 1mL of oleic acid
Shake well.
Record your observations.
Note: since oleic acid is a long chain carboxylic acid, you may need to add excess of

Set up a boiling water bath.
Prepare two esters using a combination of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid from the list
below.

Carboxylic Acids
isoamyl alcohol / 3-methyl-1-butanol
ethanoic acid / acetic acid,
methyl alcohol / methanol
salicylic acid
Note and record the odors of each individual reactant used.
To prepare the ester, put the acid and corresponding alcohol into one labeled test tube and
mix well.
If the reactant is a liquid, use approximately 3 mL.
If the reactant is a solid, use approximately 1 gram (small scoop).
Carefully add 10-12 drops of conc. H2SO4 (CAUTION!) to the test tube which acts as a
catalyst.
Gently mix and place the test tube in a boiling water bath for 10 - 15 minutes.
Prepare 2 small beaker half filled with distilled water.
Remove the test tubes, and pour the hot solution in each separate beaker.
Immediately, fan the vapor and record your observation.
