PROCEDURE
1. Place 1.0 g phenol (C6H5OH), 15.0 mL 10% NaOH solution, and 1.8 mL
benzoyl chloride in a 50 mL mixing cylinder.
2. Shake the mixture vigorously for 10-15 min. Phenyl Benzoate is formed
as a white precipitate.
3. Filter the Phenyl Benzoate applying Vacuum Filtration Method and wash
the precipitate twice with 10 mL distilled water.
4. While filtrating, set up the reflux apparatus for carrying out
recrystallization.
5. Place the Phenyl Benzoate crystals in a 250 mL round bottom flask, add
10 mL ethanol, put 3-4 boiling chips and start heating to dissolve the
crystals under reflux system.
6. Cool the hot mixture till room temperature as soon as the room
temperature reaches use ice water bath to continue cooling and do this
cooling process during 5 min to increase yield of ester.
7. Weigh up a filter paper.
8. Filter the Phenyl Benzoate crystals applying Vacuum Filtration Method.
Wash the crystais with 5 mL of cold ethanol. Be careful: Do not use
ethano! more than 10 mL to avoid any loss of phenyl benzoate crystals.
9. Place the filter paper with phenyl benzoate crystals on a watch glass.
10. The phenyl benzoate crystals should be dried during one day.
11. Weigh up filter paper with dry white phenyl benzoate crystals.
12. Record melting point of phenyl benzoate crystals.
13. Knowing the actual yield of phenyl benzoate, find out the percent yield
of the ester.
