Step 1

Oxygen tension at which hemoglobin becomes 50% saturated with oxygen is called as p50. Oxygen hemoglobin dissociation curve tells about the affinity of hemoglobin and oxygen. The curve is plotted between the hemoglobin saturation with oxygen versus partial pressure of oxygen. When the the affinity is high, low oxygen partial pressure is sufficient to saturate the hemoglobin shifting the curve towards left whereas when affinity is low, more partial pressure of oxygen is required to saturate the hemoglobin.
