Nitrogen gas in a well-sealed piston-cylinder device undergoes a three-process cycle for which
some of the pressure and volume values at the start and end of each process are defined in the
table below. The cycle is formed by connecting states 1, 2 and 3 in sequence (1-2-3) creating
Process 1-2, Process 2-3 and Process 3-1, in sequence.
State
Volume
Process characteristics
V (m³)
1
1 (start and end of cycle;
also start of Process 1-2
and end of Process 3-1)
2 (end of Process 1-2 and
Pressure
P (kPa)
1000
Process 1-2 follows the trajectory defined by
PV1.5 = C, where C is a constant
Process 2-3 represents isochoric heating to state 3
Process 3-1 represents an isobaric process
start of process 2-3
3 (end of Process 2-3 and 1000
start of Process 3-1)
Please answer the following questions.
a. For process 1-2 determine the value of the constant C, include its units.
b. Sketch the processes on a P-V plane and determine the missing values for P and V in the
table above.
c.
Is Process 3-1 a compression or an expansion process? Explain why and create a
schematic for the system, include the boundary and all the energies you suspect cross
the boundary.
d. On a P-V diagram plot the three processes such that the cycle is defined, include values
and units on the axes. You may use Excel, MATLAB or any other application you are
familiar with.
e. The piston is subjected to a force produced by the pressure of the gas and therefore the
displacement of the piston results in a change in gas volume. In chapter 1 you learned
about the relation between force (F) and surface area of force application (A). In
chapter 2 you learned that a force that produces a displacement produces work which
mathematically for a generic process 1-2 is expressed as W₁,2 = ₁ F. dy=
√3/₂ () Ady = f P.dV. This particular type of work is called "boundary
y₁
work." For each process, please compute the boundary work that results from using the
expression, include the units.
f. Now that you have computed the boundary work for each process, compute the work
done by this cycle by adding the work for each process.
