a. Explain how paradoxic motion develops
with a flail chest injury and how it causes
hypoxemia.
b. Explain why atelectasis does not occur directly
with a flail chest injury

Expert Solution
Step 1

Flail chest injury:

This is a type of chest injury.

In this injury, a portion of the rib cage is separated from the rest of the chest wall,

And this injury leads to the arousal of many serious respiratory complications.

The cause of this type of injury is:

-severe blunt trauma,

-serious fall or a car accident.

a. Explain how paradoxic motion develops with a flail chest injury and how it causes hypoxemia.

In this injury, there is loss of a rigid chest wall occurs.

ANd this will result in the flail portion of the chest being drawn inward.

And this portion is of a low-pressure area during inspiration,

ANd this will lead to compressing the lung and result in reducing oxygen diffusion.

In the alveoli there is decreased concentration of oxygen occurs in the alveoli because of the shunting of air between the lungs.

And thus this will decrease the diffusion.

This leads to:
-Development of the mediastinal flutter

-Venous return also decreases

-There is a decrease in oxygenation of blood also occurs.
