Expert Solution
Distillation Column reflux

Distillation is the process of separating two components of the mixture based on the differences in their boiling points.

Reflux: It is amount of liquid condensate that is fed back into distillation column.

Reflux ratio: It is the ratio of amount reflux to the overhead product or amount reflux to the vapour.

a) More is the reflux ratio greater will be the diameter required for the distillation column.

(i) Hence column 1 has smaller diameter

(ii) Column 1 has less heat requirement for reboiler.
