Suppose for a particular student, the ith subject had ci credit hours, and the student obtains a grade-point of xi in that subject, in a semester. If the student takes n such classes, then the total number of credit hours is Σ ci, for all i ∈ [1, n] and the grade point average is,

GPA = (Σ xi ci) / (Σ ci).

By convention, a grade F indicates a 0 grade-point.
