A student carries out a titration to find the concentration of 65.0ml of HCl using 0.250M NaOH. The initial volume of NaOH in the burst is 10.40mL. The final volume of NaOH in the buret is 42.0mL. what is the concentration of the HCl in molarity?

Question

A student carries out a titration to find the concentration of 65.0ml of HCl using 0.250M NaOH. The initial volume of NaOH in the burst is 10.40mL. The final volume of NaOH in the buret is 42.0mL. what is the concentration of the HCl in molarity?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Titration, is the process which help to determine, the concentration of unknown solution by titrating to the known solution concentration.

Step 2

Given information:

Volume of HCl solution = 65 mL

Concentration of NaOH solution = 0.250 M

Initial volume of NaOH in burette = 10.40 mL

Final volume of NaOH in burette = 42 mL

Total volume of NaOH used = Final volume - initial volume

                                              = 42 mL-10.40mL

                                              = 31.6 mL

Expression for number of moles is given by:

Molarity = Number of molesVolume Number of moles = Molarity×Volume

Substituting, 31.6 mL volume and 0.250 M concentration in the expression:

Number of moles =0.250 M×31.6 mL                          =7.9 milimoles

Number of moles of NaOH is 7.9 milimoles.
