Question

A speaker is recorded at 65 dB at a distance 5.0 m. If two of the speakers are played simultaneously, how many dB will be recorded at the same distance?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Sound in perceived form and as calculated numbers in dB very differently.

If the sound perceived is doubled, it only results in an increase of 3 dB in the total sound pressure level.

That is for every 3 dB increase in sound pressure level, the perceived sound level doubles.

The equation for sound pressure level is given by p2rms = p2ref×10P10, where

P is the sound in decibles (dB).

Total mean square sound pressure is p2trms = p21rms+p22rms

The total sound pressure level is given by Lpt = 10 log10p2trmsp2ref
