A saggar is a ceramic, boxlike container (round, oval or cubic in shape) used in the firing of ceramic wares, glass, gold etc., to protect ware or contents from the flame in kilns or furnaces. Traditionally, saggars are made primarily from fireclay. Saggars have been used to protect, or safeguard, ware from open flame, smoke and gases. Modern saggars or crucibles are made of alumina ceramic, cordierite ceramic, mullite ceramic and silicon carbide.
