A piece of news reported that Jenjarom, a town located in the Kuala Langat District, is now smothered in 17,000 tonnes (17mil kg) of plastic waste. There were 33 illegal factories in Kuala Langat, the district Jenjarom is located in. Some sprang up nearby dense palm oil plantations, whereas others were closer to town. The smell started a while ago but got worse around August this year. People in the town started to feel unwell and would keep coughing. These illegal recycling plants choose to dispose of plastic a cheaper way - either burying it or burning it causing fumes - so hazardous that some people even coughed up blood clots while some could not sleep at night because of the smelly air. Children were also affected, especially those who lived nearest to the factories in Jenjarom. There were reports some children developed really bad rashes around their stomach, neck, legs, and arms. Their skin would keep peeling, even when touched by people, and hurtful. The smell was far and wide in the air. Assuming that you are an environmental advisor to the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, propose some solutions and control measures to solve the above pollution issue and prevent it from happening again in the future.
