These illegal recycling plants choose to dispose of plastic a cheaper way - either burying it or burning it causing fumes - so hazardous that some people even coughed up blood clots while some could not sleep at night because of the smelly air. Children were also affected, especially those who lived nearest to the factories in Jenjarom. There were reports some children developed really bad rashes around their stomach, neck, legs, and arms. Their skin would keep peeling, even when touched by people, and hurtful. The smell was far and wide in the air.
