A parent of a Grade 6 student may feel that HPV immunization is offered too early and would encourage earlier sexual activity. HPV vaccination costs approximately $525, but it is free for all students in Grade 6 to 12 as it is most effective when administered to those who have not been exposed to human papillomavirus yet. HPV vaccine has already reduced the rate of cervical cancer by half. Providing HPV vaccines to all students in Grade 6 will greatly reduce the number of cases of cancer in Alberta in the future. If most of the girls in the target ages are vaccinated, they would provide a herd immunity for the rest of the population. If less than half of the girls in the target population are vaccinated, then the boys need to start getting vaccinated. The Seventh Generation Principle of the Iroquois states that the decisions we make today should lead to a sustainable future for the next seven generations. If the HPV vaccination is implemented for the next 40 years, it is predicted to eradicate all cancers caused by HPV.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common type of sexually transmitted infection in the world. It is estimated that more than 80% of sexually active men and women will be infected with some form of HPV at some point in their lives.
The vaccine for HPV protects against the most common types of virus that are associated with cervical and anal cancer. The vaccine prevents about 99% of cancers and warts caused by HPV.
Currently in Alberta, HPV vaccines are offered to all students in Grade 6. The vaccine is administered in three doses.
