Angular speed, acceleration and displacement
Angular acceleration is defined as the rate of change in angular velocity with respect to time. It has both magnitude and direction. So, it is a vector quantity.
Angular Position
Before diving into angular position, one should understand the basics of position and its importance along with usage in day-to-day life. When one talks of position, it’s always relative with respect to some other object. For example, position of earth with respect to sun, position of school with respect to house, etc. Angular position is the rotational analogue of linear position.
The top in Figure P8.55 has a
moment of inertia of 4.00 x
10-4 kg . m2 and is initially at
rest. It is free to rotate about
a stationary axis AA'. A string
wrapped around a peg along
the axis of the top is pulled in
such a manner as to maintain
a constant tension of 5.57 N
in the string. If the string does
not slip while wound around
the peg, what is the angular speed of the top after 80.0 cm of
string has been pulled off the peg? Hint: Consider the work
that is done.
