Question

A modern day zeppelin holds 9,520 m3 of helium. Compute its maximum payload at sea level. (Assume the helium and air to be 0 degree Celsius and 1atm)

Expert Solution
Step 1 :Introduction

The buoyant force exerted by air on helium  is calculated by using the formula Fb=ρagV , where ρa=1.225 kg/m3 is the density of air , g=9.8 m/s2 is the acceleration due to gravity and V=9520 m3 is the volume .

The weight of helium downwards is calculated by using the formula Fg=ρhgV , where ρh=0.18 kg/m3 is the density of helium .

Thus the maximum payload is calculated by using the formula Fp=Fb-Fh
