A major part of the various Numbered Treaties was education. The Elders wanted Indigenous children to compete in the modern world. In the 1880's it was decided by the Federal Government that the Residential school system would be introduced. Young children from the age of 6 would be forced to attend various Residential schools all run by the various church groups in Canada. It is quite clear that this form of education was a complete failure on so many levels.
