Oersted's experiments showed that current in a wire can deflect compass needles. Let's go through the
calculations of such an experiment.
Say you have a compass needle that's originally oriented int the direction of the earth's magnetic field
(assume that at this location, the Bearth = 25µT in the direction of the original compass needle
orientation) . You then move a wire (assume infinitely long), that is oriented in the direction of the
earth's magnetic field, on top of the compass. Assume that the distance between the wire center and
the compass needle is 4 mm. The compass needle deflects 15° counter-clockwise when the current is
turned on.
