A developmental psychologist thinks that an infant’s response to noise may be somewhat determined by their different inherited temperaments. To investigate this, the psychologist recruited parents with infants under the age of 6 months and gave them a questionnaire that measured the temperament of their infant. The psychologist then selected 12 infants who were rated as having an “easy-going” temperament and another 12 infants that were rated as having an “active” temperament. The psychologist then exposed half of each temperament group to a sudden loud noise and the other half to a sudden soft noise. The infants’ startle reaction was measured using the eyeblink method (in msecs) and the data is displayed in Table 4. Test the hypothesis that startle response of infants to loud or soft sounds depends on their temperament setting alpha at 0.05 and using all the steps of hypothesis testing.
