Question

A compound containing carbon, hydrogen and bromine has the following mass precents of each element, and has a molar mass of 363.74 g/mol.
19.80% C     2.203% H     77.97% Br
a.    Determine the empirical formula for the compound.
b.    Determine the molecular formula for the compound.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Empirical formula is the skeletal version of the molecular formula of a compound.

The number of moles of a substance is the given mass of the substance upon its molar mass.

For determining empirical formula mass ,we calculate mole ratio of elements . Then make the ratio as whole number by dividing with a suitable number to get empirical formula .

Then we calculate no of empirical  formula units per molecule by dividing molar mass by empirical formula mass.
