Applications Of Reflection Of Light
When a light ray (termed as the incident ray) hits a surface and bounces back (forms a reflected ray), the process of reflection of light has taken place.
Sign Convention for Mirrors
A mirror is made of glass that is coated with a metal amalgam on one side due to which the light ray incident on the surface undergoes reflection and not refraction.
Each of the parts in this problem has a description of an object and an optical device (a lens or a mirror). A sketch of each part is shown below in which the centers of the mirrors and the focal points of the lenses are shown. The radius of curvature of each mirror is R, and the focal length of the lenses is f. For each part, determine:
- the image is real, virtual, or no image is formed
- the image is on the same side of the optical device as the object or the opposite side (if there is no image, indicate this)
- if at image is formed, on which side of the optical device must the observer be in order to see it
