A 24 year old female patient is delivering her first child. She is healthy and the pregnancy has progressed normally. During labor her cervix dilated 4 cm and no further. Her contractions have continued for 12 hours, and she has become tired and frustrated. Currently, the fetus is not distress; however, she is being prepped for a cesarean section?   what term is used to describe what occurring with the patients labor? Under what conditions would this become an emergency cesarean section? Why is it important for the CST's in a health care facility to use the same setup for this procedure?

Expert Solution
Introduction

The term incomplete cervical dilation (ICD) can be used to describe the current circumstance of the patient.

ICD is one of the causes of obstructed labor or dystocia. When a labor progresses more than 12 hours, it is likely to result in dystocia. In this situation, the relaxation of the cervical rings during dilation is incomplete and prevents the generation of a proper birth canal for delivery of the fetus. This leads to the retention of the fetus inside the uterus and can cause various complications. This problem is more common in women who are pregnant for the first time.
