A 17.0 kg block of metal measuring 12.0 cm by 10.0 cm by 10.0 cm is suspended from a scale and immersed in water as shown in the figure below. The 12.0 cm dimension is vertical, and the top of the block is 4.90 cm below the surface of the water. (a) What are the magnitudes of the forces (in N) acting on the top and on the bottom of the block due to the surrounding water? (Use Po = 1.0130 x 105 N/m2. Enter your answers accurate to at least four significant figures.) 1017.8 N N Scale Ftop F bottom 1029.6 = = (b) What is the reading of the spring scale (in N)? 154.8 N (c) Show that the buoyant force equals the difference between the forces at the top and bottom of the block. Fluid Pressure
The term fluid pressure is coined as, the measurement of the force per unit area of a given surface of a closed container. It is a branch of physics that helps to study the properties of fluid under various conditions of force.
Gauge Pressure
Pressure is the physical force acting per unit area on a body; the applied force is perpendicular to the surface of the object per unit area. The air around us at sea level exerts a pressure (atmospheric pressure) of about 14.7 psi but this doesn’t seem to bother anyone as the bodily fluids are constantly pushing outwards with the same force but if one swims down into the ocean a few feet below the surface one can notice the difference, there is increased pressure on the eardrum, this is due to an increase in hydrostatic pressure.
