_9. An airline knows from experience that the distribution of the number of suitcases that get lost each week on a certain route is approximately normal with u = 15.5 and o = 3.6. What is the probability that during a given week the airline will lose less than 20 suitcases? a. 0.8944 b. 0.4040 c. 0.3944 d. 0.1056 _10. Assume that the heights of American men are normally distributed with a mean of 69.0 inches and a standard deviation of 2.8 inches. The U.S. Marine Corps requires that men have heights between 64 and 78 inches. Find the percent of men meeting these height requirements. 62 a. 96.26% b. 31.12% c. 99.93% d. 3.67%
Continuous Probability Distributions
Probability distributions are of two types, which are continuous probability distributions and discrete probability distributions. A continuous probability distribution contains an infinite number of values. For example, if time is infinite: you could count from 0 to a trillion seconds, billion seconds, so on indefinitely. A discrete probability distribution consists of only a countable set of possible values.
Normal Distribution
Suppose we had to design a bathroom weighing scale, how would we decide what should be the range of the weighing machine? Would we take the highest recorded human weight in history and use that as the upper limit for our weighing scale? This may not be a great idea as the sensitivity of the scale would get reduced if the range is too large. At the same time, if we keep the upper limit too low, it may not be usable for a large percentage of the population!
