Consider a square-planar ML4 complex in which cach ligand possesses a n
system made up of two p orbitals that are perpendicular to the M-L bonds. If
the four p orbitals are all in the plane of the molecule, as shown on the right,
these orbitals are designated pll. Use the p|| as a basis to determine the
characters of the p | representation by using the character table for the Da
point group below and the full set of the symmetry operations of each group.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Molecular orbital theory is used to describe the structure of a molecule by identifying the orbitals present in it. It can used to determine the magnetic properties of a molecule by analyzing the number of electrons present in bonding and anti-bonding molecular orbitals.

Step 2

Generally it is considered that in molecular orbital theory atomic orbitals of same energy interact with each other to form molecular orbital. However, the atomic orbitals of two different atoms having unequal energy can interact with each other in molecular orbital theory. This phenomenon is called mixing of orbitals.

This can takes place between those orbitals that have similar energy and possess symmetry. For example, 2s orbital and 2p orbital have same symmetry of infinite rotation and inversion, represented by σg. When these orbitals mix together, the energy of 2s decreases and the energy of 2p increases.
