Impact of Climate Change on Harvey
Extreme weather events such as Hurricane Harvey have been frequently identified as a warning
of the future impacts of climate change. Making connections between specific events and climate
change are tenuous at best, but there are some aspects of climate change that may be associated
with events such as Harvey's destructive impacts.
Climate features involved with Harvey included the latent heat available to fuel the storm, which
was affected by the Gulf of Mexico ocean temperatures; the winds that drive the waters of the
storm surge onshore; the steering currents that drive or stall storms; and the precipitation from
high amounts of atmospheric water vapor. These also influence a much higher storm surge.
