How do the graphs of the functions f(x)=x2 and f(x)=x21 differ? We graphed them at the start of this section. What is the difference between their graphs? How are their graphs the same?

Use the Vertical Line Test to determine whether the graph represents y as a function of x.

An outpatient operating room charges each patient a fixed amount per surgery plus an amount per minute for use. One patient was charged 250 for a 30-minute surgery and another patient was charged 450 for a 90-minute surgery. Determine the linear function that would be used to compute the charges. Use the function to determine the charge when a patient has a 45-minute surgery.

Minimizing cost A company that produces and sells digital cameras has determined that the total weekly cost C(x), in dollars of producing x digital cameras is given by the function C(x)=1.5x2144x+5856. Determine the production level that minimizes the weekly cost for producing the digital cameras and find that weekly minimum cost.
