Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is a synthetic polymer. 

Polymers have very large molecular weight as they are formed by the combination of several monomeric units. These monomeric units are interconnected by covalent bonds. Their exact molecular weight can not be determined directly because of the possibility of breaking of chains of monomeric units.  So, different methods are used to determine the molecular weight of polymers.
