Expert Solution
The Transtheoretical Model

The transtheoretical model or the stages of change model was developed by Prochaska and DiClemente in the 1970s. The focus of this model is the process of decision-making when the individual is going through a behavior change. The model assumes that people don't change their behavior quickly and are in general indecisive about it. This model proposes that each individual goes through six stages. The stages are as follows:

  1. Precontemplation: In this stage, individuals do not wish to take any action about their behavior in the near future and they are often not aware that they possess a problematic behavior. During this stage, people do not look at the pros of changing behavior rather they look for the cons of the process of changing.
  2. Contemplation: In this stage, individuals start realizing that they need a healthy behavior change in the near future. They realize that their behavior might be problematic and needs a change. Even at this stage they are neutral about changing the behavior.
  3. Preparation: Also known as the determination stage, in this stage, the individuals get ready to take an action within a month and they start believing that changing their behavior may lead to a better life.
  4. Action: During this stage, the people begin to act on the behavior change process and they keep moving forward with the behavior change. They modify their schedule and incorporate healthy behaviors.
  5. Maintenance: During this stage, people begin to sustain the recent behavior change (approximately 6 months) and decide to maintain this change for longer. They even start to work and exhibit other behaviors so that they don't relapse.
  6. Termination: In this stage, people are sure that they will not relapse and are not prone to return to unhealthy behavior.
