1. Use the software to translate your Lewis Dot Structures
into a 3D model image.
o For molecules 1- 18 use the modeling
simulator modeling simulator by Phet (University
of Colorado).
o For molecules 19-24 use the modeling
builder model builder by MolView.
o The links to the software are provided in the
attachment. You will be using 2 different websites,
depending on the molecule. You have to click
around and explore and figure out how to use the
software. Give it a go, but ask me if you need help!
2. Draw the 3D picture for each molecule. You must draw
the molecule in 3 dimensions; make sure your 3
dimensional picture looks like the 3D model image. You
do not have to be an artist, but the 3D drawing must have
the correct Bond Angles and Shape. You may use balls
and sticks or atoms and wedges (use what we learned in
lecture to help you).
3. For each 3D image, state the following:
o State the bond angles
o State the electron geometry and molecular
geometry
o FYI -- This doesn't apply for diatomic molecules,
because there is no bond angle..you can't have an
angle with only 2 atoms!
4. Indicate the overall polarity of the molecule (molecular
dipole moment). Use a single arrow to indicate the overall
polarity of the molecule on the 3D structure. Make sure
your answer is clear (for example, use a different color).
5. Assign a hybridization to each central atom in the
molecule (not just the carbons). Be sure you count all the
electron groups when you assign hybridization.
