The respiratory system is involved in exchange of gases between the environment and the body. It includes the nose, trachea, bronchi, lungs, and diaphragm.
Air enters the body through the nose and flows through the trachea. The trachea is a tube that splits into two smaller diameter tubes known as bronchi. Each bronchus serves each lungs. Within the lungs, the bronchi split into smaller diameter tubes known as bronchioles. The bronchioles terminate in alveoli (air sacs).
Gas exchange occurs at the alveoli, as the alveoli are enriched with blood vessels. Oxygen is picked up by red blood cells and delivered to all cells.
Smoking, inhaling pollutants, exposure to heavy metals, etc. can compromise the functioning of the lungs.
