There are 92 protons and 143 neutrons in the nucleus of each uranium-235 (U-235) atom, for a total of 235. The arrangement of particles in uranium-235 is somewhat unstable, and the nucleus can disintegrate if excited by an external source. When the U-235 nucleus absorbs an extra neutron, it quickly breaks in two. 

This splitting of nucleus is known as fission. 

During the fission of U-235 nucleus, it releases two or three neutrons creating a chain reaction.
