Step 1: R/S absolute configuration rule

For the chiral carbon i.e. the carbon atom having four different groups attached to itself.

  • If the 4th priority group is present at above the plane and the 1->2->3 priority groups are arranged in clockwise direction then the configuration will be 'S' or the 1->2->3 priority groups are arranged in anticlockwise direction then the configuration will be 'R'. 
  • If the 4th priority group is present at below the plane and the 1->2->3 priority groups are arranged in clockwise direction then the configuration will be 'R' or the 1->2->3 priority groups are arranged in anticlockwise direction then the configuration will be 'S'.
