- Primary alcohol (hydroxyl group attached to 1⁰ carbon ) oxidizes into aldehyde. Aldehyde can undergo further oxidation if oxidizing agent is strong(eg.-potassium dicromate, potassium permanent etc.) If we want aldehyde product then reagent like pyridinium chlorocromate (PCC) or anhydrous CrO3 are used.
- Secondary alcohols forms ketone upon oxidation.
- Tertiary alcohols don't undergo oxidation generally .For their oxidation , very strong oxidizing agent and and higher temperature is required. In this case ,we get mixture of carboxylic acids having lesser carbons then reactants.
