Introduction

The circulatory system in a frog is of the 'closed' type with the heart pumps blood through this system. The heart is triangular in shape and contains three chambers - two upper auricles and one ventricle.

The right and left auricles are separated by a faint inter-auricular groove. Both the auricles are separated from the ventricle by the coronary sulcus or the auriculo-ventricular groove which is narrow and occurs transversely.

There are two additional structures in the frog heart - sinus venosus which supplies the right auricle and the truncus arteriosus which holds the blood pumped from the ventricle during contraction of heart. This blood is then supplied to the body via the aortic and pulmocutaneous arches.

Valves guard the opening between auricles and ventricle. The auriculo-ventricular valves are present between the upper auricles and the ventricle below and allow the flow of blood during contraction in addition to preventing backflow of blood. Similarly, the semilunar valves are located between the ventricle and the truncus arteriosus to prevent backflow of blood into the ventricle. A spiral valve guards the opening of the truncus arteriosus into the aortic and pulmocutaneous arches.
