Nomenclature for organic compounds carried out by using IUPAC nomenclature rules. The general rules for alkanes are as follow -
(1) Longest chain rule - according to this rule , first of all we have to select the chain which contains maximum number of Carbon atoms.
(2) Lowest sum rule - according to this rule , after selecting longest chain, we have to Numbering from that side , from which we get lowest sum of all substituted groups.
(3) Naming of substituted groups or side chains - first of all names of substituents written according to alphabetical order then name the main chain at last. It's name is alkyl, for example - methyl, ethyl, propyl etc for 1,2,3 ........ Carbon atoms.
(4) Main chain name - Parental chain name is according to alkane , thus alk means number of Carbon atoms (meth, eth, prop, but , pent, hex, hept, Oct, non, Dec, undec, dodec, tridec etc.) Then ane means single bonded Carbon atoms.
(5) If more than one side chains are there, then before naming of substituents di , tri, tetra used for 2,3 and 4.
