Jessie's Story
Around this age, I cared mostly about going to school and hanging out with my friends. Even
though she was the most important person in my life, I had a really bad relationship with my
mom and began spending more time with friends. My mom was always telling me I ate too much
and was wasting my life hanging out with people who were going nowhere in life. I started to
rcally doubt mnyself around this time. To get some relicf I would go to my room, put on my
headphones, and crank up the volume on my music really loud. Somchow this seemed to make
me fecl better, at least temporarily. Around 16 we moved and I started attending a new school. I
didn't know anyonc and it was scary and intimidating. Everyone was in groups. There were
skaters, stoners, jocks, and geeks to name a few. Everyone seem to have their own area of the
school to hang out in and I felt out of place. I even ually wound up hanging out with the goths.
No onc said anything specifically but my dress style started to change. I had a lot of black
clothes before but now colors almost disappeared from my wardrobe. Around this time I got into
my first relationship. I wouldn't say there was any formal dating involved. We were all just
hanging out as a group and I became closer and closer to one person. Then all of the sudden it.
just scemed like we morphed into boyfriend and girlfriend. I felt accepted and happy in my
group. They told me not to listen to my mom and that I was smart and good looking. Many of my
friends were in advanced placement English and they encouraged me to enroll too, even when I
doubted my own abilitics. I loved my friends but also felt like I wanted to have a wider circle.
When I talked to people from other crowds I sometimes got the cold shoulder from some of my
own friends. I didn't like it but decided that it if they couldn't accept mc for who I was they
weren't real friends. In time they came around and all was good. Overall I really enjoyed this
time in my life. I felt I learned some important lessons, one of which was how great it was to me
part of a group but how important it is to still be your own person.
