14. Figure 5B-4 shows temperature and salinity values representative of waters at those same depths throughout much of the Mediterranean. This water flows over the Gibraltar sill (which rises to a depth of about 290 m) and into the Atlantic, where it mixes with some cooler and less saline water then sinks to within a few hundred meters of 1000 m depth. This is the origin of the a. North Atlantic Central Surface Water b. Mediterranean Intermediate Water c. North Atlantic Deep Water

Transcribed Image Text:Figure 5B-4 provides profiles of the ARVOR-L Profiling Float in the
Mediterranean Sea. The left profile shows the change in temperature (°C) with
depth. The right profile shows the change in salinity (psu) with depth. The data was
collected on 21 November 2020, a week after the data collected from the Atlantic
sample in Figure 5B-2. Water flows from the Mediterranean Sea into the Atlantic
Ocean over the Gibraltar sill at a depth of about 290 m. The warm, salty water from
the Mediterranean Sea mixes with water in the Atlantic Ocean.

Expert Solution

Step 1
Water mass is a volume of seawater with temperature, salinity and therefore density. There are numerous water masses in the ocean, mainly in the Atlantic. There are three three types of water masses-upper waters(0-500m), intermediate waters(500m-1500m) and deep waters(1500m-bottom).
