Question
Weight of a homogeneous bar AB is 600 lb. Calculate the reactions at supports A and B.
Expert Solution
Step 1
A simply supported beam carrying a uniformly varying load (UVL).
Magnitude of UVL at support B = 120 lb/ft
Length of bar = 9 ft
Weight of bar = 600 lb
Step 2
The total load of the UVL will be equal to its respective area and its centroid will lie at the 1/3rd length of beam from the maximum end.
Also, as the bar is homogeneous, so its weight would be distributed uniformly over the entire length of bar and will have its centroid at the center of the bar.
