12.6 SCUBA divers have maximum dive times they cannot exceed when going to different depths. The data in Table 12.4 show different depths with the maximum dive times in minutes. Use your calculator to find the least squares regression line and predict the maximum dive time for 110 feet. X (depth in feet) Y (maximum dive time) 50 80 60 55 70 45 80 35 90 25 100 22 Table 12.4 The third exam score, x, is the independent variable and the final exam score, y, is the dependent variable. We will plot a regression line that best "fits" the data. If each of you were to fit a line "by eye," you would draw different lines. We can use what is called a least-squares regression line to obtain the best fit line. Consider the following diagram. Each point of data is of the the form (x, y) and each point ofthe line of best fit using leastsquares linear regression has the form (x, ŷ). The ŷ is read "y hat" and is the estimated value of y. It is the value of y obtained using the regression line. It is not generally equal to y from data
Correlation
Correlation defines a relationship between two independent variables. It tells the degree to which variables move in relation to each other. When two sets of data are related to each other, there is a correlation between them.
Linear Correlation
A correlation is used to determine the relationships between numerical and categorical variables. In other words, it is an indicator of how things are connected to one another. The correlation analysis is the study of how variables are related.
Regression Analysis
Regression analysis is a statistical method in which it estimates the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variable. In simple terms dependent variable is called as outcome variable and independent variable is called as predictors. Regression analysis is one of the methods to find the trends in data. The independent variable used in Regression analysis is named Predictor variable. It offers data of an associated dependent variable regarding a particular outcome.
