Question
Microfauna alone decomposed leaf litter most rapidly
mesofauna and microfauna together could not decompose any leaf little
macrofauna alone provided the slowest decomposition
faunal groups of all sizes together provided the most rapid decoposition
soil fauna plays no role in leaf littler decomposition

Transcribed Image Text:Different groups of the soil organisms affect leaf litter decomposition in different ways. In a study of
decomposition rates in an agricultural field, leaf litte rbags of different mesh sizes for the selective
exclusion of soil fauna by size were filled with standardized dried leaves and placed on the same soil.
The smallest mesh size (0.25 mm) only allowed microfauna (such as protists, nematodes, and fungi)
to access to the leaves. The medium sized mesh (2 mm) allowed microfauna and mesofauna (small
arthropods, like mites and springtails) to access the leaves. The largest mesh size (4 mm) allowed
microfauna, mesofauna, and macrofauna (beetles, millipedes, and termites) access. The research team
got the following result. Based on the data, what conclusion can you draw?

Expert Solution

Step 1
MICROFAUNA
These are those microorganisms which are microscopic but exhibits animal- like features and qualities.
MESOFAUNA
The invertebrates which falls between 0.1 mm and 2 mm in size and live in leaf litter in soil, are known as Mesofauna.
MACROFAUNA
These are those organisms which have the size greater than 2mm of size.
